Musical Futures at Benton Park School
- Four years implementing Musical Futures approaches
- Elements of Musical Futures feature in the schemes of work for years 7 and 8, giving students a wide range of musical opportunities and experiences.
- Classroom Workshopping and Band Instrumental Work is at the heart of many year 7 and 8 lessons. This has been a highly successful way of motivating students and developing their instrumental skills (guitar, keyboard, bass, drums, ukulele, vocals) as a whole class. In Year 8, Samba ,Taiko drumming project and other world musics (African, Indian) are covered as part of an improvisation unit.
- Year 9 students focus on small group work through ‘In at the deep end’ and ‘Guide to songwriting’ units using and developing the skills acquired in Years 7 and 8
Why Musical Futures?“Pupils are continually building skills which will allow them to be successful in Year 9 and beyond. As a direct result of these methods of teaching we have high numbers of students opting for music at KS4 and 5 where we now run BTEC courses which seem far more appropriate to the students needs.”
