Musical Futures at Ely College:
  • Running MF for 4/5 years. The trigger was the suggestion that music is so important in so many people’s lives, yet is it one of the most loathed subjects at school which was heard at a Musical Futures event.
  • To begin with, staff felt dazzled by MF concepts and ideas, but as they matured they began to do what felt most useful in their circumstances - picking out the principles & ethos of MF and adapting materials.
  • Staff gained in confidence and began to write their own materials and adapt the online resources from MF. They even designed a measuring tool to describe ‘independent learning’.

Why Musical Futures?

'One of the elements of MF is student choice in their learning. We found that opening up choice is better managed gradually, so in Year 7 there is less choice of material, though there is choice in working-groups and activity within those groups; Years 8 & 9 see more options for students as we give them more autonomy in materials. Year 10/11 is AQA GCSE Music which currently provides a great deal of latitude in both performing and composing – students who have enjoyed MF at KS3 fall easily into self-programmed learning at GCSE. A-level is a little more didactic, but ensemble skills and performance still form a big part of the specifications.'
