Musical Futures and the Secondary National Strategy Key Stage 3 Music Programme – a comparative analysis

Musical Futures and the National Strategy for Key Stage 3 Music are two new initiatives that share a common aim: to improve music teaching and learning in Key Stage 3 Music and to enhance the musical lives of students, in and out of school.

This document aims to outline the core similarities between the two initiatives and to offer suggestions for where the approaches differ. This is intended as a guide for teachers and hopes to demonstrate that teachers can deliver the National Strategy and Musical Futures simultaneously: it is a companion guide to the teacher’s resource pack below.

Teachers' Resource Pack

Section 1
Introduction

Personalising Music Learning has become a key theme of Musical Futures, perhaps inevitably since our starting point has been to find ways to engage more young people in music, for longer.
Section 2
Classroom Resources for Informal Learning

Exploring ways to enhance pupil motivation, enjoyment and skill acquisition in Key Stage 3 music lessons by tapping into the real-life learning practices of popular musicians.
Section 3
The Whole Curriculum Approach

The Whole Curriculum Approach is designed to develop musical provision and opportunities in an area where educational achievement and pupil self-esteem are very low.
Section 4
A Guide to Personalising Extra-curricular Music

Getting the fullest picture of students’ musical progression is best served by piecing together their experiences in formal , non-formal and informal locations.
Personalising Extra-Curricular Music Activities for 11-18 Year Olds

Created by our Leeds Pathfinder, these materials build on the Extra Curricular section of last year's Teachers Pack. These resources provide schools with a wide range of work materials and tools to both personalise out of hours projects and connect them to curriculum learning.

Pamphlets

The final pamphlet in the series presents the key findings and the voices of those involved in the project, telling the story of how Musical Futures came about and what we've learned from the experience so far.

This pamphlet addresses the last of the five key fundamental enquiries of Musical Futures and questions what skills are needed for versatile, flexible and reflective music practitioners to which young people will positively respond.

This pamphlet reports on the ways in which Musical Futures participants have asked for support, and suggests ways in which opportunitites to participate, and progress, in music can be built around those needs.
