Learning Futures is a new Paul Hamlyn Foundation special initiative which has developed out of the success of Musical Futures

The key aim of Learning Futures is to ensure that more young people engage actively and positively with their learning through school (and achieve better learning outcomes as a result) and also retain a commitment to learning beyond their school years.

Learning Futures invites secondary schools to develop and test new models of pedagogical practice that better meet the needs and aspirations of teachers and young people in the 21st Century. Schools will be asked to develop proposals to put into practice our four key Learning Futures principles (which have been derived from the underpinning principles of Musical Futures):

  • Ensuring relevance of learning (for young people themselves)

  • Co-constructing  the curriculum and pedagogy (with young people)

  • Valuing and incorporating learning experiences and processes both in and out of school contexts

  • Varying the learner /teacher mix, recognising the value of a much wider range of roles than the traditional teacher-pupil relationship and power dynamic.

The Paul Hamlyn Foundation working in close partnership with the Innovation Unit to develop and take forward this initiative.

Enthusiastic support has already been received from schools, headteachers, key national education agencies and leading thinkers within education, for the ideas that have emerged and the potential for Learning Futures to act as a significant catalyst for change.
