The Whole Curriculum Approach
The Nottingham Musical Futures project sets out to provide musical pathways for students who have not previously been engaged in sustained musical activity. One of the ways that it aims to do this is through a Whole Curriculum Approach (WCA) for year 8, designed following extensive consultation with students as an alternative provision within the compulsory school curriculum.

Bigwood, Henry Mellish and Haywood Taiko Group
After learning the basics of Taiko during their Musical Futures lessons at school, ten year 8 students from each 'whole curriculum approach' school formed a 30 piece taiko group to perform at the launch event of Nottingham Children's Services held at Nottingham's Albert Hall in April 2006. Listen to a recording of the rehearsal and download a copy of the rehearsal sheet to play along!
Image Junction 2006! 'Boom Bip'
Students from Henry Mellish and Haywood schools created music technology backing tracks for a film. Then they layered their own minimalist violin, guitar and percussion loops over the top, to form a complete score for the film. They gave a public performance of their piece to a back projection of the film. See the film and listen to the soundtracks here.
Bigwood Samba Band
Six Year 8 classes each had a one hour 'crash-course' in samba drumming. This included learning basic rhythms and breaks used in samba as well as learning about the different roles each instrument plays in the overall rhythm. Listen here to recordings of year 8 students at Bigwood School playing their first Samba performance.
Now's the time! Haywood & Henry Mellish Jazz
For two days in October 2005, Year 8 students at Henry Mellish and Haywood schools became Jazz musicians. They learnt how to play the main melody parts to Charlie Parker's 'Now's the time' by ear. Whilst playing along to a live backing band, each student also played their own improvised solo part during the performance.
